On the eve of our 30th anniversary, we decided to craft a wine that truly exemplified and celebrated our three generations of winegrowing experience at our estate in the Santa Ynez Valley. We named this wine The Ambassador in honor of Ambassador Leonard Firestone, who planted our first vineyard in 1972. It is a classic Bordeaux-style blend that incorporates our most prized vineyard blocks, chosen for their potential to yield a wine of extraordinary depth, complexity and character. The individual lots of five varietals were aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, then merged to create this limited-production wine. Our 2001 The Ambassador boasts a deep, intense bouquet of cassis, caramel, anise and dark chocolate. The cassis notes continue on the palate, attributable to the core contribution of Cabernet Sauvignon. The signature of Merlot is found in accents of black cherry, while a small percentage of Malbec yields nuances of tobacco and spice. Petit Verdot adds color intensity and a rich, chewy texture. Finally, Cabernet Franc contributes structural finesse and enhances the finish with firm, integrated tannins. This wine represents the finest expression of our estate and will reward careful cellaring.
