90 Points - Wine Enthusiast. A savory nose of roasted red pepper and marinated black olives makes this wine from the Santa Ynez Valley’s first estate winery stand out from the crowd. There are green elements that some may consider unwanted, but the round, peppery spiciness makes for an intriguing, distinctive palate. This would go well with a New York strip and could stand up to prime rib with horseradish. --Matt Kettmann
Winemaker Notes
Our 2010 Merlot delivers textbook aromas of black and red cherry with bright raspberry notes. On the palate, subtle toasted oak adds a soft vanilla and spice element to round out the fruit. Supple tannins give way to a long finish.

Production Notes
The 2010 vintage was unseasonably cool from March to July. Bloom and fruit set took longer than they normally do, but gave us very good yields. We experienced average rainfall, that ended early, and gave the vines the moisture they needed so little irrigation was necessary. The intense heat of summer came late, but when it arrived, the vines responded accordingly. As a result, the wines from this vintage display concentrated fruit characters and extraordinarily balanced palates.
